Three Signs You Need Professional Drain Cleaning

Posted on

The importance of drain cleaning cannot be spoken of enough. You rely on your drains to flush out waste from your sinks and toilets, so without them, the hygiene levels in your home would drop down significantly.

But cleaning your drains doesn't mean using over-the-counter drain cleaners, as this could potentially damage your plumbing system. Instead, it means seeking drain cleaning services. Not sure you need drain cleaning? Check out these three signs.

Slow Moving Drains

Is your kitchen sink still filled with water one hour after you have finished doing the dishes? Or perhaps your shower drain is extra sluggish. Whatever the case, understand that drains are made to be fast as they utilize gravity to flush out waste and wastewater farther down and into the septic tank. So, when the drains are slow, it means some of the waste is clogged up somewhere.

Don't assume the drains will get better. Professional plumbers have pipe cameras to monitor the entire drain and identify where the clog is located. After that, they can apply specialized devices, such as motorized drain augers and hydro-jetters, to get rid of the entire clog. Some devices may be potentially dangerous if mishandled, so always entrust the job to an expert plumber.

Bad Odors

Is a foul odor coming out of your sink or pipes? If your answer is yes, you might be looking at a problem in the sewer drain. Typically, foul odors occur when food particles or grease are trapped inside the pipes for too long. Unfortunately, this is another situation where DIY methods like plunging or putting baking soda down the drain may not work.

Besides, smells may emanate from a rodent that's trapped in the drain lines. This contaminates your water, exposing you to serious health issues. Hence, call a professional to inspect the entire drain line and clear the odors.

Your Fixtures Back Up

Water is supposed to go down your pipes. When your fixtures back up, chances are there's a blockage in the drain. In most cases, the blockage causes sewage to spill into your bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. Apart from having a foul smell, the sewage is toxic, posing a threat to all the people in your household. Hence, this is an emergency, and you should call a plumber immediately to remove the blockage.

Addressing the blockage quickly also saves you money. If a clog is left unattended, it becomes more solid. With time, it might cause the pipes to burst, costing you a lot of money in pipe replacement. By calling a plumber early, the clog is identified and removed before extensive damage occurs.
